A burner that does not spark, a burner that sparks without a flame and a burner that keeps clicking after lighting are different symptoms. Tell us which pattern you notice, and whether it affects one burner or several. Do not keep attempting ignition when a burner will not light.
If you smell gas, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location, then PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. Do not continue appliance troubleshooting.
What you can check safely
Turn the affected control off.
Allow the cooking surface to cool before inspecting accessible parts. Do not leave an unlit burner turned on or attempt to bypass an ignition system.
Consider recent cleaning or spills.
Viking manuals identify wet or dirty igniters as one possible reason for continued sparking. Consult the care instructions for your exact model and allow cleaned parts to dry thoroughly.
Check the model’s removable-cap instructions.
If your appliance has user-removable burner caps, follow the manual’s placement and cleaning instructions. Do not alter an igniter, enlarge openings or adjust the gas supply.
Write down the pattern.
Record which burners are affected and whether the issue began after cleaning or installation. A visible pattern helps describe the problem; it does not prove which component needs replacement.

If you smell gas, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location, then contact PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. Do not operate electrical switches or attempt to find the leak. Persistent ignition problems, unusual flames and electrical concerns require qualified assessment; gas and wiring adjustments are not homeowner checks.
